Here’s a blog Jon posted about his current condition:

So I finished my 3rd cycle of chemo. It was really tough.
This isn’t getting any easier. It is the hardest thing I’ve had to got through
so far. I told people before, I can truly understand why some people just want
to let go and stop going to chemo. It wears you out so bad. Sometimes you just
want to say forget it…make me comfortable and enjoy the time I have left. It
is hell. The worst pain, nausea, anxiety and fear all balled up in to one
feeling. I cant come close to describing the way it actually makes you feel.
I’m not giving up. I have 5 more chemotherapy treatments. Then I don’t know what
happens. Hopefully the tumor will be gone and the Leukemia in remission. If
not, then I’ll figure it out when I get there. I had a CAT scan while I was in
for the 3rd Cycle and it showed that the tumor in my chest has shrunk almost in
half.
That was wonderful news. Hopefully it keeps on shrinking. Thanks again
everybody for the prayers and support. I love you all. Don’t take your life and
health for granted like I did. Be thankful for each day. This life we have is
borrowed. Take care.

Dustin and I had the privilege of dogsitting Dozer, Vera & Dayton’s English bulldog, while they were away on their honeymoon.  I must say, this was one of the easiest dogs to care for — he liked to lay around and just chill most of the time.  He did enjoy his afternoon play sessions (although they couldn’t last more than about 5 minutes because he would get so hot and out of breath), and he liked his dusk-time walks to the mailbox (and pooping in the neighbors yards), and he really looked forward to his right-before-bedtime tug-of-war game with his toy monkey — but other than those few things, he didn’t require much.  He was such a sweet dog and we are glad we had the pleasure of his presence for the few days that we did!

WALK…Jeni…WALK

July 24, 2008

In the past few months I’ve participated in two 5K races.  Before my surgery, I used to love (love love love) doing these races.  They gave me something to put on my calendar to remind me that I should be staying on a healthy track.  They also gave me an easy way to support several philanthropic events and charities throughout San Antonio.  Since I haven’t been able to run in the past 8 months I’ve been sticking to non-impact machines in thy gym for my exercise, but I finally reached the breaking point — I couldn’t be stuck inside anymore…so I signed up for the 5Ks in the walking division.  I had so much fun (even though I was just walking) and it felt really good getting back on the pavement with so many people around me.

I walked in the Police Officers 5K sponsored by the Run-a-Way Athletic Club on May 24.  This race had a special place in my heart as I walked in memory of my Uncle Robert who passed away from brain cancer last August (he was a long time police officer in the city of Southlake).  The race’s theme was geared toward honoring policemen who had lost their lives not only in the line of duty, but from other causes as well — which was nice.  Caty (my running and running around buddy) ran the race too.  She placed 13th in our division with a time of 32:10 and I placed 26th with a time of 46:48.

This past weekend on July 19, I participated in the San Antonio RoadRunners Women’s 5K – a race dedicated to women and supporting them in running events through sponsorships and scholarships.  Over 400 women showed up to run and walk the 3.1 mile race and it was awesome to be part of such a girly event.  Several of my friends participated – here are our times:  Me – 41:59…I placed 1st in my age group in the walkers division!, Caty 30 minutes flat, Sharon 31:38 (she’s currently training for the SA 1/2 Marathon!), and Lisa 43:02 (it was her first 5K ever!).

Updates on Jon Jon

July 15, 2008

First of all, thanks to all of you who continue to pray for my cousin’s health and well-being during such a difficult time.  It’s been a while since I posted any updates on him and still your care and concern continue to pour in day and night.  My uncle (Jon’s dad) recently started his own blog to keep everyone apprised of Jon’s situation and instead of recreating the info myself, I am going to refer to his blog for updates in the future.  Charlie (my uncle) is a nurse and he is able to capture the situation in writing a little bit better than I can.  I’ll post a few pictures and such here, but for the full deal, check out www.CharlieWardsBlog.blogspot.com.

Updates in short:
Jon’s benefit entitled ‘Kick Cancer’s Ass’ @ Halo Lounge on June 14th was a huge success.  Jon was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support.  The bar and the sale of shirts (designed by Mandy) brought in a few thousand dollars to help with financial obligations.  Here are a few pics from the benefit included the front of the shirt my cousin Mandy designed as well as the story behind the shirt.

Jon is a HUGE FAN of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).  On June 19th, UFC Fighter Travis Lutter visited Jon in the hospital.  Travis offered Jon words of inspiration, fighting encouragement and invited Jon to train with him as soon as he is healthy enough.  Travis left Jon with an autographed “TEAM LUTTER” T-shirt and an autographed set of UFC sparring gloves. Really cool keepsakes for Jon to draw motivation from and commemorate a fantastic visit from this UFC Warrior.

Currently, Jon is enduring his 3rd round of chemotherapy.  He has had many adverse affects from the lethal drugs, but the good news is that they seem to be shrinking the tumor in his chest ever-so-slightly.  Please continue to pray as he fights.

And then they were 1…

Big, happy family of 2!  Words cannot explain the elegance, allure, and pure romance that I (and I’m sure every other guest) felt at my best friend’s wedding last night.  The celebration started with an awestruck ceremony filled with laughter, tears, and amorousness where Vera and Dayton exchanged letters to one another, vows, rings and their hearts.  The festivities continued with a lovely dinner and dance filled with meaningful and expressive activities – my favorite of which was the anniversary dance.  My speech, although less eloquent than I had envisioned, gave me the perfect way to show Vera how much her friendship means to me and allowed me to officially welcome Dayton into our family of friends.  And when the festivities finally ended, I was left with a  feeling of merriment which I have never quite felt before.  Vera & Dayton – I wish only that your hearts be overwhelmed with love for one another for the next 100 years!  Congrats and welcome to the married life!

As I celebrated the 4th of July with my friends this year, I couldn’t help but be reminded of the men and women who fight for our freedoms. My cousin, Joey, will be joining their ranks in just a few short weeks as he deploys to Iraq for his first tour of duty as a United States Marine. God bless our soldiers and their families who anxiously await their safe return. The playlist below contains 2 of my all-time favorite country songs…let them remind us of the sacrifices that are made on our behalves. The pics are from the fireworks show Dustin and I watched with his parents and our good friends, Jess & Rick. There is also a pic of my cousin Joey and his beautiful girlfriend, Rose (may God grant her the strength to make it through the next 7 months!).

Playin’ in Playa

July 4, 2008

We just returned from a fabulous weeklong vacation in Playa del Carmen, Mexico and are still (4 days later) trying to return to a ‘normal’ life. It’s hard not to beseech a michelada or banana daiquiri when the clock hits 3pm (the beginning of happy hour at our resort), but we are slowly getting used to the idea. Our vacation included several days of rest and relaxation as well as some SCUBA diving and a few other outdoor adventures. Here’s how it went:

  • Saturday – Dustin arrives in Playa with the Hausmans (family friends who made our trip possible by giving us a condo to stay in), he checks into the hotel and hangs around bored to death awaiting my arrival :) He had friends there so I’m sure he stayed occupied – by the time he picked me up from the airport on Sunday afternoon, his new favorite drink was a Bushwhacker.
  • Sunday – I arrive in Playa and join Dustin at the Royal Hacienda. We eat dinner at the hotel restaurant that night and hit the sack early to prepare for our action packed Monday. Here are a few pics of our hotel.

  • Monday – we join the Hausman gang (all 34 of them (technically there were 44, but only 34 joined us this day)) and headed to Salvatica for ziplining, bike riding, cenote swimming and lunch. It was awesome, although I must admit climbing to the zipline platforms was quite frightening for me. Dustin was the daredevil in this sport and even did a zipline hanging upside down! That night we joined the entire group for an ambrosial Mexican dinner at La Parrilla.

    • Tuesday found us lying poolside, ordering drinks from the cabana boy and catching some rays – awwww, the life!
    • Wednesday – SCUBA diving was the activity of choice. Our first dive was at Mama Viña, a 90 foot wreck dive where we saw lots of coral, a large school of fish, and lots of interesting barnacles on the sunken boat. Our second dive was at Barracuda where there proved to be a lot more sea life and several turtles. After diving and eating lunch we spent the rest of our day lounging on the beach.

    • Thursday – while Dustin slept in (he didn’t get home from going out until 8am!), I jumped on the dive boat and had an amazing time diving the Tortugas and Moc-che dive sites. I saw sea turtles, lots of small fish, some sizable sea spiders, 2 lobster, 2 red moray eels, a few yellow spotted stingrays, and at separate times I swam through a formidable school of tarpon (about 100 to 125 fish some weighing up to 200 pounds!) and a
grandiose school of anchovies that encased my body as I went through them. Again, the beach and poolside bar were our places of interest for the remainder of the day.

      • Friday – our last day of diving took us to Tres Rios and Cerebros where we swam up, over, around, and through huge coral formations that made a maze-like course rising up from the ocean floor. Crab, lobster, tiny blue hair-like shrimp, a green eel, a black spotted eel, and multitudinous tropical fish were the creatures of the day. This night we dined at La Bodeguita, a Cubanrestaurant, to celebrate AJ’s 60th birthday. We got some cool party favors too – a shirt commemorating the trip and an engraved wine glass etched with thetheme of the week.

      • Saturday – we flew home (unfortunately). It was hard to leave, but as we did we felt rested and as though we had been away from the worries of the world for quite some time…you can’t ask for much more from a vacation.

As you look through our photos from the trip, I want to remind you that this was my first time using a real underwater camera (not just the disposable kind) and I took lots of practice pictures trying to get my exposure, lighting, flash, and zooming correct so that I could capture the best aspects of the underwater environment Dustin and I love so much. So while you will see lots of pictures of coral (which may not be that interesting), there are some <what I consider> good pictures of sea life if you look for them.

Enjoy and until next time, adios amigos!

A few weekends ago I had the privilege of helping my dear friend Vera celebrate her “last free night” as a bachelorette. The party took place in Boca Raton, FL where Vera’s sister Jove welcomed 9 of Vera’s friends into her beautiful home. I think I can speak for all 9 of us when I say it was the best bachelorette party I have ever been to.  Each morning the bright Florida sun rose to a day filled with activities to celebrate the bride-to-be. Friday, we went aboard the Hosanna for a day of cruisin’ the open sea, snorkeling with a private snorkel guide, munchin’ on some delectable sandwiches and snacks and soaking up sun. That night Jove whipped up her signature homemade lasagna and after dinner we all enjoyed fine wine on the covered patio while relishing some great girl-time. Saturday found us eating whale fries and dolphin at the Whale’s Rib and then lounging on the soft sand of the Florida coast. That night started with a lingerie party and ended with men in thongs…needless to say, some great memories were made! It’s a weekend not to be forgotten and one that I am thrilled I had the chance to partake in. Vera, I love you with all of my heart and I am so happy to see you happy!
